Children share rooms, sometimes piling into a single bed. In Victorian times, the bathroom is a status symbol. Only well-to-do families have a tub, and a toilet is rarely installed inside the house. Another style that blurred the lines of Victorian homes is the Eastlake style home. In this floor plan, the bathroom is merely a small second-floor room appointed with a tub and a washstand.

The two architecture styles Grant noted to be the most famous of the Victorian period (Italianate and Queen Anne) are both technically revivals of earlier architecture styles, though both took on lives of their own and were “often exuberantly decorative without much concern for historical accuracy,” Grant says.
